Reading Logs, Reading Workshop

Dear Mom and Dad,

I have brought home my Reading Log tonight!  Please be sure and read with me and then help me to remember to finish filling out the Reading Log (I am practicing thinking about what I read).

Love,

Your Wonderful First Grader :)

Dear Parents,
Your child has brought home, for the first time in First Grade (VERY EXCITING!!) their brand new Reading Logs.  We spoke about this at Parent Night, but I thought I would review it here with you.  Below are the reading log directions:  (there is an example in the picture below)
  • Have your child write the title of the book and date (today they practiced and did this in class, but will be doing at home after today)
  • Listen to your child read the book (it is important that you are there to listen to them while they read so you can ask them questions and be sure to praise the effort and care they are taking to become POWERFUL readers)
  • Your child should then put a check mark for how many times they read the book.  For example if you listened to them and they were so excited they wanted to then read it to a brother or sister or dog or cat or fish or teddy bear..  (They are only asked to read it once but if they want to read it more than once it is excellent for fluency practice AND confidence)
  • YOU will need to initial that you listened to them in the spot marked (initialed by Mom or Dad)
  • Your child then needs to rate the book: 1 star, 2 stars or 3 stars...depending on how much they like the book
  • BRING THE READING LOG AND BOOK BACK EACH DAY IN THE HOME/SCHOOL FOLDER

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING IN READING WORKSHOP?

I am glad you asked!  Below are some pictures of the charts we have made together during our Reading Workshop time.  These can help you when you are reading with your child at home.  They can tell you all about the charts and looking at the charts before they read at home will help them to think about their reading.  I will continue to send you these throughout the year as we make new ones that pertain to what we are learning.  Feel free to print them out and put them in the spot you have chosen with your child as your 'reading corner' spot.  I look forward to hearing about the first night of recording in their Reading Logs.

HAPPY READING
