Decomposing Numbers

Today in math 1JT worked hard on decomposing bigger numbers.  They will be coming home tomorrow with some homework to help them practice this skill.

Below you will find a video that explains the decomposing method for double digit addition.

Shadows

How do the Earth, Sun and Moon Work Together?
This is one of our guiding questions for science and today we studied the answer to part of it by experimenting with our shadows. 1JT noticed that at different times of day our shadows look different.  We also discovered when we went outside this afternoon to trace our shadows again, that when the sun is covered up by a cloud our shadow disappears.  Some of the questions 1JT explored were:

Why is my shadow smaller/bigger at different times of the day?
Why does the sun make a shadow?
Why/how does the sun change position in the sky?
(These were fun discussions, please continue them at home - they are wonderful inquirers!)

Below is a short video about shadows:

Settings, Bigger Numbers and The Moon

Painting the settings for our new realistic fiction stories!  Be sure to ask your child to tell you about the story they are writing.

We are practicing adding bigger numbers using place value.

The Moon

Dear Parents,

Your child came home last week  with the below moon calendar.  As we dive into our unit on the Solar System we will be studying the moon and why it looks different each night.  Please take some time with your child and look at the moon each night and help them record what they see on their Moon Calendar.  Also, you will notice I have added a picture from the Startracker App.  This is a fun app for your I-pad or I-phone where you can see the stars and planets in real time.

Happy moon watching!

You are Invited, Fun With the AP Physics Students

It is that time of year...portfolio share is coming soon.  Your child is coming home today with an invitation that looks like the one below.  Please be sure to check their folders and save the date on your calendars for June 4th from 9:00-9:30/45.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Today we were treated to something VERY special by the AP Physics students!  They showed us their science experiments and explained how they worked.  We learned a lot of fun things and enjoyed our time with them.  Ask your child what their favorite experiment was.

Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund

I toke this picture while my family and I were trekking in the Annapurna region of Nepal just a few years ago during the time we lived there.  I will be talking this week with 1JT about Nepal and what it was like to live there.  We will discuss the earthquake and what the TAISM community is doing to help.  The details have been in the newsletter and I have posted them below as well.

Thank You Ms. OHearn

Thursday was Ms. OHearn's last day in our classroom, but she will of course always be a part of 1JT.  Thank you Ms. OHearn for taking such great care of our family!!  Ms. OHearn will be working around in defferent areas of TAISM for the rest of the year.  Please take a minute to stop and thank her for all she has done for us.
