1JT News and Reminders

THANK YOU!  Thank you for being a part of the Read to Feed program and helping our Grade One class to make a difference in a child's life.  We will gather all that has been raised and report next week on our goal of purchasing a cow.

Thursday is the Fall Festival
*there will be no ASAs on this day
*your child will need to wear their TAISM uniform to school

November 5th 12:00 - 8:00
November 6th 8:00 - 4:00
Wednesday your child will bring home a letter for you to sign and return indicating whether or not you will be able to come on the day and time provided on your slip.  I look forward to seeing each of you to share in your child's growth over the last few months!

PLEASE send your child each day with a hat and re-useable water bottle.  1JT will be going outside for P.E. starting November 2nd and will be required to have a hat and water bottle for class.

What you have been waiting for... AND MORE!!

They have posted!  You can now listen and enjoy your child's very first published piece of writing on the 1JT student blog (there is a link to this blog on the right of the screen).   The student's are very excited to share their stories with you and look forward to reading your comments.

Speaking of comments.... next week we will be learning how to write a quality comment and will be commenting on our friends work using the quality commenting format. I have posted the format below.

Our First Published Writing Piece

Wonderful Writers
First Grade has published their very first writing piece!  With their finished books they headed out to the basketball court to share what they had written with friends from the other two classes.  Then to continue celebrating their wonderful writing skills they created special hats by weaving 'pencils' into a paper visor and topped it off with a badge proclaiming, "I am a Writer!"

Wondering how you can read these magnificent writing pieces?  Stay tuned!  1JT will be adding them to their student blog soon, where you can comment and share with your family and friends around the world.

Reading Stamina

We have reached our reading stamina goal.  We are so excited and proud about how we have grown as readers.
We know how to:
*stay in one spot
*read for the whole time
*re-focus when we are distracted
*use our reading strategies chart to figure out words we don't know
*use our thinking questions to think about and remember what we have read

Congratulations 1JT Rockin' Readers

Checking for Understanding

1JT worked hard today to make sure that as they read they asked themselves questions to practice thinking about their reading.  The students worked with their reading partners and in groups.  You can use these same questions at home too!  I encourage you to practice these questions with your child when they read to you at home.  They could even ask YOU the questions after you read together.

Have fun and enjoy the great conversations that will
                                                 follow!

Helping Others..The Rights of a Child..Read to Feed

Students are learning and thinking a lot about children around the world that do not have their rights met in our Rights of a Child unit.  First Graders at TAISM  are inspired to help a family fulfill all the rights of their children through a fundraiser called Read to Feed from the Heifer International Organization.   It will be a two week fundraiser ending on October 28th.   On Tuesday afternoon ask your child what our goal is and how that animal will help others.  Please see below for more details.

This video will be seen by your children tomorrow at school and helps explain how they will be helping.  The students are extremely excited!

IT STARTS THIS TUESDAY!!

What is coming home Tuesday:
*Letter to parents
*Reading Log (children will not do regular reading log during our Read to Feed weeks.. they will only do the Read to Feed reading log)
*Bookmarks to give sponsors (there are 10..if you need more please let me know)

This is what the reading log looks like...
