Water... How Much Do You Use?

Today your child learned about a boy named Ryan Hreljac.  He is from Canada and when he was in First Grade he learned from his teacher about how some children do not have clean, safe water to drink and he decided he wanted to do something about it!  I have posted the youtube video below of his story.  We are also reading the book Ryan and Jimmy in class.  The children have had many questions and I have encouraged them to share this story with you and also their thoughts and questions.

To help understand how much water we use and begin the discussion of conserving water, your child has come home with the form below in their folder.  The directions are on the form in their folder.  Thank you for taking the time to do this with your child.  It needs to be returned no later than this Sunday.

Reading Strategies

Today 1JT practiced using the many different reading strategies they we learned this week when coming to an unknown word.  Students learned that 1 strategy does not work for every word.  Sometimes we have to use 2 or 3 on the same word before we figure it out.
Fluent readers use a variety of strategies to understand and figure out words (whether it is a just right book, a scientific magazine or a cookie recipe). It is important that each time they come to an unknown word they try and use the strategies they have been taught to figure them out.  The strategies we worked on this week are posted below. Feel free to print out the pictures below and hang them in your house to help your child remember to use them when they are reading at home.

Adding On...How Many More....

This week 1JT used the I-pads to help them think about math stories.  They practiced decomposing the numbers 8, 9 and 10.

Reading Buddies

Yesterday our reading buddies helped us to think about our reading.
We:  made connections ( this reminds me of when I....), predicted (what do you think will happen next...), wondered (asked questions), noticed (ah-ha! that is why that happened in the story).
You can help your child think about their reading at home using the same strategies we have been learning at school.
