Below you will find an explanation of what we are starting in math this week. The skills they are working on now will be continued on in 2nd Grade. I have included a video that will help and also a letter with explanations and examples.
Today 1JT did an activity using time. As part of the activity the student's discussed what time their bed time was. It led to an inquiry about how much time is the appropriate amount of time children need of sleep to be healthy. Below you will see the recommended amount of sleep for children by age for them to be healthy.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Sleep provides
some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at
different stages in their development. Keep in mind that these numbers
reflect total sleep
hours in a 24-hour period. So if your son still naps, you'll need to
take that into account when you add up his typical sleep hours.
Between Birth-Six Months, children need 16-20 hours Between Six-Twelve Months, children need 14-15 hours Between Ages 1-3, children need 10-13 hours Between Ages 3-10, children need 10-12 hours Between Ages 11-12, children need about 10 hours Teenagers need about 9 hours of sleep per night
THANK YOU! We all three appreciate your kindness. Our door is AMAZING :) I am also happy to be back with my 1JT family! I have missed you all very much.
Literacy
Our new literacy unit is all about realistic fiction. We are becoming character experts! Over the next few weeks we will be using the series Henry and Mudge by: Cynthia Rylant to dig deep into who Henry really is - to include his feelings, his inside characteristics, his outside characteristics and how he changes. While we study the characters in our books we will also be studying ourselves. What are your inside characteristics?
Math
In Math 1JT has been working on shapes and fractions. They practiced fractions using play dough. The students molded shapes and cut them into 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. Below is a video about fractions you can watch with your child for review.
We will be attending the middle school production of the musical "Honk! Jr." during our P.E. time on Thursday. Thus, we will not be swimming so you do not need to send your child's swim items with him/her tomorrow.
If you would like to attend "Honk! Jr.", it is playing this weekend. Shows will be on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. andSaturday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are 3 RO for adults and 2 RO for students. They are available in the Middle School Office and Reception.
Congratulations to all of the Grade 1 students for doing a great job reciting and sharing your poetry today. Thank you to the parents and Grade 4 buddies for providing positive feedback!
